Hospitals face temporary loss of reservist nurses

Houston Chronicle (Internet / Print) 02/12/06 (no direct weblink available) “At the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, we have made temporary adjustments in staffing and scheduling in order to cover for staff who are absent due to being called to active duty,” said Ellarene Duis, RN, Ph.D., CNAA, BC, project director Magnet Recognition and Shared Governance, Nursing Administration, University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. “We have not had a significant impact on staffing since it is usually only a few people from a large department who are on active duty at one time. We accommodate nurses doing military and disaster service, such as Red Cross volunteers and Disaster Medical Assistance Team volunteers, often with very little notice because it is the right thing to do.”
