GISD working to improve science scores

Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 01/10/06 http://galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=b19c028bfde6d98c I read with great interest and concern the Jan. 1 front page article, “GISD students falling behind?” I would like to address the root issue, science performance in our elementary schools and progress under way throughout the district. Some of the new science initiatives being implemented at our elementary schools include instructional delivery initiatives, new instructional technology initiatives and resources for teachers, plus content-specific initiatives. New instructional initiatives include the Questioning and Understanding to Improve Learning and Thinking (QUILT) Program and the 24/7 Classroom Walk– Through with Reflective Feedback. In addition, GISD and Galveston College are partnering in the dual credit program giving Ball High students the opportunity to earn college credit while in high school. Plus, GISD is partnering with UTMB and Texas A&M universities for training and equipment use to improve the science program.
