Chikungunya has been reported in a Florida man and woman who had not recently traveled, health officials said Thursday — the first indication that the painful virus has taken up residence in the United States. The strain of chikungunya circulating in the Caribbean is the Asian strain, and it’s only adapted to be carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, says UTMB’s Scott Weaver, who’s been studying the virus for years. And so far, that mosquito can only be found in the far southern United States.
