Patient Care

Residents are expected to:

Evaluate an abnormal airway using clinical skills, radiological studies and consultation with the surgeon and patient's record.

Formulate a safe induction, airway management, maintenance and emergence plan for a variety of ENT cases (i.e., endoscopies, major head and neck cancer procedures, uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, tracheostomy, nose and sinus surgery, ear surgery, pediatric BMT and T&A).

Apply advanced techniques of airway management for securing the airway, as well as for extubation

Demonstrate anesthetic techniques directed toward high volume, short surgical duration, and rapid OR turnover.

Perform topical anesthesia of the airway and awake fiberoptic intubation skills in patients with difficult airways.

Evaluate the various specialty endotracheal tubes (including laser tubes) available and utilize them in appropriate situations.

Demonstrate proper mask ventilation skills for pediatric BMTs.

Plan a general anesthetic, airway management and postop care plan for a patient with OSA.

Plan emergence and extubation in the presence of pharyngeal blood.

Predict and prepare the special equipment needed to transport a patient with severe ARDS from the ICU to the OR for a tracheostomy.

Design a safe anesthetic for T&A, including premedication and postoperative pain control.
