Residents are expected to:

Review the anatomy, including innervation, of the upper airway.

Summarize the ASA Difficult Airway Algorithm.

Outline specific principles and techniques of general anesthesia for surgical procedures of the head, neck, ears, oral and nasal cavities, in both adult and pediatric patients.

Discuss the principles, indications, and techniques for invasive monitoring of patients for head and neck cancer surgery.

Review risks of laser use in the airway and define laser safety principles.

Describe the rationale for the use of a neuromuscular stimulator or nerve conduction monitor by the surgeons and its influence on the planned anesthetic.

Review the pathophysiology of sleep apnea.

Summarize the ASA Practice Guidelines for the Perioperative Management of Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Review the clinical picture and differential diagnosis of tracheal stenosis

Describe the rationale for use of intracardiac EKG tracing during antecubital central line placement.

Summarize the effect of N2O diffusion on the middle ear.

Discuss the causes of the high incidence of PONV in ear surgery and describe prevention and management.

List various methods for managing a bleeding tonsil.
