“Utilization of Diabetes Self-Management Program among Prostate, Breast, and Colorectal Cancer: Survivors: Using 2006-2019 Texas Medicare Data"

This pilot project is focused on investigating the utilization of Diabetes Self-Management Training (DSMT) among prostate, breast, and colorectal cancer survivors with diabetes using 2006-2019 Texas Medicare data. The Balanced Budget Act has permitted Medicare to cover DSMT since 1997. However, a national study found that only 5% of Medicare beneficiaries have ever participated in DSMT despite its proved clinical and financial benefits. No study has researched utilization among cancer survivors with diabetes in Texas and contribution factors yet. In response, this study has two specific aims (1) to examine the trend of DSMT utilization among Texas Medicare beneficiaries who survived from prostate, breast, and colorectal cancers for more than five years from 2006 to 2019, and (2) to compare the effectiveness on health outcomes including reduction in hospitalization and ER visits between DSMT users and cancer survivors who never participated in DSMT.
