On Sept. 24, UTMB and the Galveston County Health District began providing booster doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for high-risk groups. The number of groups eligible to receive the COVID vaccine booster is now being expanded based on occupational risks.

UTMB is opening the booster vaccine program to all teaching staff (even if not a health care worker) who directly interface with students and have previously received the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. In addition, employees who support health care and teaching operations are also now invited for the booster dose.

On Sept. 22, the FDA gave approval for a booster dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID vaccine for specific high-risk groups. The CDC has now provided final recommendations regarding boosters.

Due to a decline in COVID-19 cases in our area and in UTMB hospitals, a modified visitation policy will go into effect on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021.

The COVID-19 Clinical Task Force addressed a change in the distribution of monoclonal antibodies, which may impact supply. Current stock should be used judiciously to reach those most at risk for severe disease or hospitalization.

UTMB Health has made COVID-19 vaccinations available in many UTMB primary care clinics. Vaccines are administered to people age 12 and older at clinics throughout the region. Appointments are required and are easy to make online.

Per Texas HB 2211, hospitals are prohibited from restricting in-person visitation for a patient receiving care or treatment at the hospital during the COVID pandemic, unless certain exceptions apply. Our current visitation policy for non-COVID patients already complies with the new law, and modifications related to COVID patients will soon be in place (access restricted).
