In view of the rising number of COVID-19 cases due to the more contagious and more virulent Delta variant, employees and students should take additional actions to protect themselves and everyone we serve in our communities.

Internationally, the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus has been spreading fast and has caused significant increases in hospitalizations and mortality. It is expected to be the predominant strain in the US within a few weeks. At UTMB, our virus sequencing effort has shown an alarming increase in the prevalence of the Delta variant. This summer and the start of a new academic semester will bring many new faces to our campus. In support of the state’s efforts to ensure every Texan has the opportunity to be vaccinated against COVID-19, UTMB is now providing COVID vaccines at all primary clinic locations and, starting June 24, 2021, we will begin offering the vaccine to all eligible hospitalized patients. It is important for all UTMB caregivers to participate in ensuring our patients are offered the opportunity to receive the vaccine. Details for clinical staff are now online (access restricted).

In keeping with Gov. Greg Abbott’s May 18 Executive Order, UTMB Health is updating its masking requirements, effective 11:59 p.m., May 21. See the university’s message to employees to learn where masks are still required and where they are recommended but optional in UTMB facilities.

The two-dose Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is now available for individuals age 12 and older. This message is intended for UTMB employees, who must be logged onto the UTMB network to access the full text.

With the current relatively low levels of COVID infections in our region, the COVID Clinical Task Force has updated our policies to allow vendors or contractors into UTMB clinical facilities if they are performing critical training or performing permitted procedures in clinical areas.
