Delivering Comfort, Compassion and Exceptional Care in Neurosurgery

This month we are pleased to highlight Shanna Thompson, RN, MSN, FNP-C, Nurse Practitioner in the Department of Neurosurgery.

In his nomination letter for Excellence in Clinical Practice, Dr. Peter Kan commended her for consistently providing evidence-based, compassionate care to the patients of the neurosurgery service.

"Using clinical history and physical exam findings, she frequently identifies and diagnoses neurological problems requiring surgery different than the reasons patients were originally referred to our service. She guides these patients through the process of pre-surgical workup, counseling on risks and benefits of surgery, and then finally post-operative care and recovery," Dr. Kan says.

Ms. Thompson is known for excellent bedside manner and goes the extra mile to coordinate patient care outside of the clinic/hospital, frequently calling patients at home to make sure they are doing well and their concerns are addressed. She also helps them navigate insurance paperwork and find access to healthcare resources whenever possible.

"She always brings a positive attitude and uplifting mood to the service, raising the spirits of doctors and patients alike. She has set a high benchmark for clinical care, leading by example within the Department of Neurosurgery," Dr. Kan says.
