Expanded Retina Services Bring Sight-Saving Care Closer to Home

Muhammad Musab Shamim, MD, finds retina surgery to be a uniquely immersive experience – one that combines precision, patience, and profound impact.

“The eye is fascinating. Retina surgery almost feels like scuba diving,” he says. “I’ve never actually gone scuba diving myself, but when I’m operating in the back of the eye, it feels like I’m entering an entirely different world.”

This fall, UTMB Health welcomed Dr. Shamim to its ophthalmology team, marking an exciting expansion of the institution’s retina care services, particularly in areas where surgical retina care is still being established.

Dr. Shamim’s clinical focus includes the management of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and a wide range of other retinal diseases. His surgical expertise encompasses vitrectomy, scleral buckling, and secondary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation – procedures that can help restore vision for patients with complex eye conditions.

Originally from the Midwest, Dr. Shamim moved to Texas during middle school and later earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine. He completed a transitional internship at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois, followed by ophthalmology residency training at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He then pursued advanced fellowship training in Vitreoretinal Surgery at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago.

“My parents are physicians, so I grew up seeing how meaningful it can be to restore someone’s health,” he says. “That sense of purpose, combined with my interest in science and fine surgical work, naturally led me to ophthalmology.”

Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Shamim is deeply committed to global service and surgical outreach in underserved regions. This international perspective complements his local mission to expand access to retina surgery at UTMB – especially in Friendswood, where there had not previously been an established surgical retina provider.

He also maintains a strong interest in emerging technologies and innovation in retinal care, including new approaches to drug delivery, imaging, and surgical instrumentation that may enhance outcomes for patients in the years ahead.

As he settles into his new role, Dr. Shamim is eager to collaborate with referring providers and help strengthen UTMB’s continuum of vision care across the region.
