Pediatrics Special Edition: A Letter from the Chair

As we approach the close of a busy and productive season, I want to share several exciting updates from the Department of Pediatrics.

Our clinical teams continue to provide exceptional, compassionate care across all sites, maintaining strong quality metrics and improving access for the families we serve. I am especially proud of the collaborative spirit demonstrated by our divisions as we expand services, support growing patient volumes, and strengthen multidisciplinary care pathways.

This year has brought significant growth across our core missions.

Clinical Care: Neonatology, Critical care, Pediatric hospital medicine, and Pediatric ED have led notable improvements in throughput, safety, and family experience and have earned national accolades from Vizient. The NICU team continues to uphold our Level IV designation through outstanding leadership and teamwork. We are experiencing major expansion in areas critical to the new morbidities of childhood, including Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, Pediatric mental health, Endocrinology & weight Management, Gastroenterology, Complex care, and rehab services, to name a few. These service lines are rapidly scaling to meet the increasing needs of our community, and we are actively building capacity, integrating behavioral health supports, and strengthening care coordination to serve children with chronic and multifaceted health challenges.

Education: Our residency and fellowship programs remain vibrant and are expanding, with recent curriculum innovations and strong trainee recruitment. Faculty across divisions continue to demonstrate remarkable commitment to teaching despite demanding clinical schedules.

Research & Scholarship: Our investigators have secured new grants, published impactful work, and advanced UTMB’s reputation in child health discovery. Growth in translational and clinical research collaborations continues to expand opportunities for our faculty and trainees.

I also want to acknowledge the generosity, professionalism, and resilience of every member of our department. Their dedication directly strengthens UTMB’s mission and ensures exceptional care for the children of Texas.
