A new study on using technology to increase physical activity and decrease sedentary behavior is looking for volunteers age 55 to 79. Participants will wear an activity monitor bracelet and use a tablet device to track and set goals. Dr. Norma A. Perez, director of the Hispanic Center of Excellence at UTMB, has been elected interim vice-president of the Hispanic-Serving Health Professions Schools, a non-profit organization established in 1996 and created as part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ “Hispanic Agenda for Action” initiative to provide quality and culturally competent healthcare to Hispanics living in the U.S. Dr. Perez will serve as an advocate for Hispanic educational advancement at all levels, from the undergraduate to the postdoctoral.


The occupational therapy and physical therapy departments at the UTMB School of Health Professions will hold two weeklong clinics this summer providing free therapy for people with neurological disease and injury, including but not limited to stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. The clinics take place the weeks of June 24-28 and July 8-12 at the School of Health Professions, 1114 Mechanic St.

The pediatrics department seeks gently used or new books for children in the hospital and the Literacy Program in pediatric clinics. Books catering to all ages, especially board books for young children, are welcome. Donations can be dropped off in room 3.300, Research Building #6 (old Children's Hospital).
