Ever wonder who makes sure your patients receive the right medications while in the hospital? During National Hospital and Health–System Pharmacy Week, October 20-26, the Pharmacy Department at UTMB Health is planning activities to help you learn more about how pharmacists contribute to patient care and to increase awareness of the pharmacy services provided at UTMB Health.

Many people are not aware that pharmacists play a critical role in preventing medication errors, advising prescribers on medication choices, and ensuring safe and effective medication use.  As the drug experts, our pharmacists work closely with medical and nursing staff to ensure patients receive the most appropriate medications, and provide assistance and advice in all aspects of patients’ drug therapy.

Our pharmacy team consists of a highly-skilled and dedicated group of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and support staff that work together to provide optimal patient care. Our clinical pharmacists round with medical teams to provide medication therapy advice, monitor medication therapy, and assist in formulary management.

UTMB staff pharmacists serve a vital role in patient care by assisting in timely medication administration, identifying adverse drug events, verifying appropriateness of medication therapy, and answering medication-related questions from healthcare professionals. Additionally, our pharmacy technicians assist with preparation and delivery of medications to patient care areas.

During National Hospital and Health-System Pharmacy Week, our pharmacy staff will be available on October 23 from 10 am to 2 pm to answer questions and to provide educational information. Please come visit our table in the Brown Atrium hallway in John Sealy Hospital.
