After work and on the weekends, people suffer hammered thumbs or wrenched ankles that require immediate attention but not a visit to the emergency room. On April 5, the Urgent Care clinic at the UTMB Specialty Care Center at Victory Lakes will be extending weekend hours to 10 p.m. The clinic, located at 2240 Gulf Freeway South in League City, is open from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. Screening mammograms for uninsured
UTMB and The Ruth Kempner Endowment for Breast Cancer Screening are partnering to provide free screening mammograms for uninsured women in Galveston County by taking the mobile mammography van to area churches in Galveston County. The screenings are being offered April 6 in Hitchcock; April 27 in Clear Lake; and May 18 in Galveston. There are criteria for eligibility and preregistration is required for screening. Registration packets are available in the UTMB Breast Imaging Department on the second floor of the University Hospital Clinic building in Galveston or the UTMB Specialty Care Center at Victory Lakes, 2240 Gulf Freeway South in League City. Summer camp deadline approaching
The deadline to apply for the free UTMB STEM Quest summer camps for middle and high school students in Galveston and the surrounding area is April 7. Registration is now open for the STEM Quest Summer Camp I for students in the seventh and eighth grades in Galveston County and the surrounding area. Campers gain hands-on experience with lab experiments in general biology, chemistry, biomedical and physical sciences, including mock crime scene investigation and robotics. STEM Quest Summer Camp II registration is open for students in grades nine and 10. Some of the activities include gel electrophoresis, microbiology techniques and recombinant DNA technology. Dementia support dinners
“Learn to live and grow with dementia” is the topic on April 8 in a series of dinners for area families, friends and caregivers of those with dementia. Hosted by the UTMB Sealy Center for Aging and the Galveston First Presbyterian Church, the dinners will take place on Tuesdays throughout April, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., in the second floor dining room at Levin Hall, located at 10th and Market streets. Free parking will be available and the price is $5 per person with reservations required by the Friday before the dinner. Silent Angels
Nominations are being accepted through April 4 for the UTMB Silent Angel award that honors a licensed nurse, non-nurse, and a unit or group whose compassion, caring and advocacy made a difference in the life of a patient, family or friend.
