Health System Week

In tandem with and following the celebration of Nurses week, UTMB will celebrate the entire Health System. Among the events scheduled is a visit from Casey FitzRandolph, Olympic speed skating gold medalist. He will share his journey from a small-town kid with a big dream, to an Olympic athlete, at noon on May 16 in Levin Hall, located at 10th and Market streets. His presentation, “Believe,” is a message of dedication, perseverance and unwavering faith in oneself.

The Lunch Bunch

UTMB’s Dr. Gordon Klein, a clinical professor in the Division of Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation and an expert in bone metabolism and nutrition, will present “My achy breaky bones: Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis” at tomorrow's meeting of the Lunch Bunch from noon to 1 p.m. at the UTMB Specialty Care Center at Victory Lakes, 2240 Gulf Freeway South in League City. Sealy Center on Aging

The new UTMB senior learning center will host a discussion “Medicare fraud: I’m not a target, am I?” at 10 a.m. on May 20. The center is in Room 1.612A, UTMB Primary Care Pavilion, 400 Harborside Drive, Galveston, Entrance A. The event is open to the public at no charge but reservations are required due to limited seating. Call 409-771-3044 before May 16 to reserve a spot. This will be the first in a series of “Medicare Moments” discussions to be held at the learning center.

Reconstruction of a Survivor

The UTMB Breast Cancer Support Group meets from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. May 15 at Christus Victor Lutheran Church, 2098 W. Main St. in League City. The group helps women at any stage of diagnosis and treatment understand that breast cancer affects them both emotionally and spiritually, not just physically. A light meal and refreshments are offered. Meetings occur the third Thursday of each month. Meetings are held in Galveston on the fourth Tuesday of the month. Diabetes support group
 
Traveling with diabetes and hurricane preparedness are the topics for this month’s meeting of the UTMB diabetes support group Monday. The group meets from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month in Suite 9 of the UTMB Multispecialty Center and Stark Diabetes Clinic, 2660 Gulf Freeway S., in League City. Mammograms for uninsured
 
UTMB and The Ruth Kempner Endowment for Breast Cancer Screening are partners in providing free screening mammograms for uninsured women in Galveston County by taking the mobile mammography van to area churches. The final screenings are being offered May 18 in Galveston. There are criteria for eligibility, and preregistration is required for screening.
