The UTMB community recently mourned the passing of Dr. Thomas N. James, a visionary leader who served as the university’s third president from 1987 to 1997. James, a pioneering cardiology researcher who guided UTMB to much growth as president in the latter part of the 20th century, was credited as the primary visionary behind the school’s three-fold increase in external research funding in the ’90s, the establishment of numerous centers and academic positions and the construction of some of UTMB’s key buildings.
“He changed the face of the campus,” said Dr. David Callender. In addition, the Galveston County Daily News reported on Dr. James’ passing and also published Dr. Callender’s memorial.
