The UTMB UHC5 Specialty Clinics recently participated in the Lee National Denim Day for Breast Cancer Awareness and raised $1,021 toward the cause. The fundraiser was a team effort with 100 percent participation by the clinic staff. Employees donated $300, which was matched by Dr. Courtney Towsend, chairman of the department of surgery, and Dr. Thomas Kimbrough, medical director for the surgery clinics. Additional donations were made by department of surgery physicians and employees as well as numerous $5 donations by those in the deparment who wanted to wear jeans for the day. In addition, UTMB Chief Ambulatory Officer Diana Browning pledged $1 for every employee who participated in the event by wearing jeans and a pink shirt.
The theme for the event was "Who do you love?" which gave donors the opportunity to donate in honor or in memory of a loved one who has been touched by breast cancer. A hall of memories was designated to showcase these special donations with messages and photos of loved ones.
The day was celebrated with lunch, complete with pink cookies and cupcakes for dessert.
