IMO Master Minds raise money to fight breast cancer

The Master MInds team from the Instruction Management Office in the Educational Affairs division in UTMB's School of Medicine recently raised over $500 for the D’Feet Breast Cancer Walk fundraiser. The team members worked together to make the fundraiser a success by making donations, volunteering at the function, running and walking in the races and decorating a bra which will be auctioned off later this month.   

Postdoktoberfest promotes fun and camaraderie

Postdocs and graduate students filled the plaza at Moody Medical Library for Postdoktoberfest, sponsored by the Organization of Postdoctoral Scientists, Graduate Student Organization, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS).The crowd consumed about 250 brats, hot dogs and veggie dogs, coleslaw, German chocolate cake, soft drinks and, of course, beer. Dr. David Niesel, GSBS vice dean, and Dr. Norbert Herzog, GSBS associate dean for recruiting, did all the cooking. Door prizes donated by the UTMB Bookstore, the MD/PhD Program and the Graduate School were handed out over the course of the evening.

WHO advisor speaks

Dr. Denny Vågerö, senior advisor to World Health Organization (WHO) Europe and a professor of medical sociology recently spoke on closing global and national health gaps at an event hosted by the UTMB Office of Health Policy and Legislative Affairs, the Center to Eliminate Health Disparities and the Galveston Global Health Consortium. Vågerö's research is presently focused on health inequalities in modern societies and public health development in Eastern Europe.

American Diabetes walk a success 

More than 40 UTMB Health team members rallied to stop diabetes during the American Diabetes Association Step Out Walk to Fight Diabetes on Nov. 6 in Seabrook. The team raised more than $2,000 for diabetes research and education. UTMB Health volunteers also provided glucose screenings at an information booth at the event.
