Excellence in Professionalism Award Winner
 
Congratulations to third-year medical student Anthony Karl Hasselbach for being the recipient of the UTMB Excellence in Profesionalism Award for the month of January.  Karl was chosen for his "compassion with patients, giving back to the scientific community through research and helping his fellow students through tutoring." The award is given each month to recognize a student who has shown exemplary professionalism within the UTMB community.
 
 
  
UTMB employees teach Advanced Burn Life Support course in Mexico
 
UTMB employees Mike Buffalo and Jamie Heffernan traveled with a small group to Mexico City to give an Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) instructors course to 15 doctors and residents.   
 
The ABLS is a course developed by the American Burn Association to assist first responders in the initial care (first 24 to 48 hours) of the burn patient. The initial care has a huge impact on outcomes, and most of this care happens before the patient can be stabilized and transferred to a burn center. 
 
The Michou y Mau foundation has supported ABLS courses throughout Mexico. This particular trip was to enable the Mexican physicians to teach the course themselves.

Nephrology Nurses Conference big success

Recently the American Nephrology Nurses Sand Dollar Chapter hosted the 13th annual dialysis conference titled “Under Construction: Route to the Future” held at the San Luis Hotel and Conference Center.The conference hosted over 160 nephrology nurses from across Texas and featured a wide range of topics including health literacy, patient advocacy and kidney transplant.

Among the attendees from UTMB were Tina Diambra from the Home Dialysis and Nephrology Department; Dorothy Gordon, Joyce Shells, Jeanene Trochesset and Phyllis Crawford from the Chronic Home Dialysis and Nephrology Department;  Barb Harper, Tammy Sharper and Endra Ramadhar from the 8B Acute Dialysis and Apheresis Department and Nicarita Sta Theresa-Steffen, transplant coordinator.
 
UTMB’s office of Nurse Recruitment supported the conference as one of the 27 vendors at the two-day event. Melissa Johnson from respiratory therapy also attended as a vendor, selling her beautiful handmade jewelry that was a hit with all the ladies.
