Three graduate postdoctoral researchers, Christopher Fry, Erin L. Glynn and Michal R. Szymanski, were named as Jeane B. Kempner Scholars at UTMB.
The one-year fellowships provide stipends for UTMB graduates to conduct post-doctoral training research projects under the supervision of qualified faculty at UTMB or at any other accredited academic institution.
Fry was selected for his proposal about the role of certain cells in the growth of skeletal muscles. Glynn’s proposal was “Biochemical mechanism of improved insulin sensitivity” and Szymanski was selected for his proposal to study the role of certain enzymes in the replication and repair of DNA.
2011 Alpha Omega Alpha award recipient
Claire Detweiler, a second-year medical student, was awarded the 2011 Alpha Omega Alpha Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship. In his notice of award to Detweiler, Dr. Richard L. Byyny, executive director of Alpha Omega Alpha, said that her receiving this honor “testifies to the quality and promise” of her project, titled “Are bacterial agents of community-acquired gastroenteritis under diagnosed? Impact of stool antigen tests for Campylobacter and enterohemorrhagic E. coli”. Detweiler will be awarded $5,000 to support her research.
Selected to serve on U.S. Technical Advisory Group
Ronald McKinley, vice president of Human Resources and Employee Services, was appointed to serve on the U. S. Technical Advisory Group for the International Organization of Standardization Technical Committee 260 for Human Resource Management. The U.S. TAG is a committee of experts in Human Resource Management that will set the U. S. national policy toward any draft ISO standards in Human Resource Management. It will also advise the American National Standards Institute on how to vote on any related issue at the international level.
