Dr. Ruben Berrocal, the Panamanian Minister of Science and the National Secretary of Science Technology and Innovation, visited the UTMB campus. Accompanied by Dr. Jagannatha Rao, director of the Institute for Science and High Technology Services in Panama, the purpose of the visit was to promote scientific collaboration between Panamanian institutions and UTMB by taking advantage of existing contacts and creating new ones.
Hook & Needles Club
The Galveston Hook and Needles Club members support UTMB chemotherapy patients by knitting and crocheting chemo caps and lap blankets which are distributed to patients monthly via UTMB nurse Cheryl Kelly-Wood.
Club members Olivia Abraham, Mary Ellen Drake, Rebecca McHenry, Joie Elmer, Jocelyne Iacono, Jacqueline Luxon, Lana Meunier, Sine and John Marschall, Joann and Gerald Mendoza, Lorraine Miller and Rita Lou Webber create their caps and blankets with donated yarn.

Executive Director of the Coordinating Center for Global Health
Dr. A. Clinton White, Jr. has been named as Executive Director of the Coordinating Center for Global Health. The Center will serve to be a central focus in organizing UTMB's multiple efforts in global health across many parts of the globe, with the goal of transforming UTMB into a leading institution in this field.
White was recruited to UTMB in 2007 to head the Division of Infectious Diseases. He developed and directs the NIH-funded Galveston Global Health Consortium, an umbrella organization for global health efforts on campus. Dr. White also serves as Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and Co-Director of the SOM Global Health Track, which he co-founded. His clinical interests include parasitology, tropical medicine, HIV, and opportunistic infections
