September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month, and UTMB Health is hosting the Prostate Health Conference 2011 on Sept. 24 at the UTMB Specialty Care Center at Victory Lakes, 2240 Gulf Freeway South in League City.
The conference begins at 8 a.m. with registration and a continental breakfast and will cover screening guidelines, current treatments and online educational tools to maintain health. Speakers include Drs. Bagi Jana, Susan Tarry, Joseph Sonstein, Todd Swanson and Diva Thielvoldt, nurse practitioner in the medical oncology survivorship clinic.

Golfing for scholarships
The 17th annual Salute to Nursing Golf Tournament and Par-Tee takes place Oct. 7. The post tournament “par-tee” takes place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. All events take place at the Galveston Country Club, 14228 Stewart Road. The deadline for registration is Sept. 23.

Student film
There will be a free screening of “Pack and Deliver,” a film by Erica Fletcher, a student in the UTMB Institute for the Medical Humanities, at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Vox Culture Warehouse, 8570 Katy Freeway, Suite 116, in Houston. The film explores the roles and collaborative practices of local social service agencies aiding survivors of human trafficking.
Visiting campus
The pharmacology and toxicology seminar series welcomed Paul Wood, professor of pharmacology at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn. and his presentation, “Altered dynamics of complex structural lipids in Alzheimer’s disease: An early pathogenic event.”
“Hydrophilic carbon clusters in cancer chemotherapy and for radical annihilation in traumatic brain injury” was the topic of Jim Tour, professor of chemistry at Rice University.
Presentations
“Diabetes: The epidemic of the 21st century and expanding differential” was the topic of Dr. William Riley, clinical professor of pediatric endocrinology.
Dr. Philip Thomas, associate professor of surgery, presented “Lessons from liver transplantation: The physiology behind innovation.”
“The yin and yang of tau,” was the topic of Dr. George Jackson, director of the UTMB Mitchell Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases.
