Four members of the UTMB management team recently shared their Hurricane Ike experiences and expertise at an Association of American Medical Colleges symposium in Chicago. The two-day seminar, “Institutional Preparedness Symposium: Crisis and Emergency Management,” focused on organizational planning, communications, business continuity activities and coordination efforts surrounding crisis and emergency management at medical schools.
Ralph Farr, vice president of Information Services at UTMB, and Mike Shriner, UTMB vice president of Business Operations and Facilities, co-presented a session on pre- and post-disaster planning and response, including shutting down and restoring all facets of a major academic health care facility. Michael Patriarca, manager of Strategic and Planning Operations for UTMB, and Cameron Slocum, vice president of Finance for the Academic Enterprise, co-led a presentation outlining UTMB’s three-year, intensive process working with FEMA to rebuild UTMB.

Victory Lakes Specialty Care Center
Victory Lakes Specialty Care Center received accreditation with the American College of Radiology for the Nuclear Medicine section of the Radiology Department. A special thank you to Dr. Fernando Cesani, Dr. Raleigh Johnson, Bethany Doyle ,Elma Brisco, and Theresa Boysen for helping Victory Lakes accomplish this goal.
Chief Engells receives national appointment
UTMB Police Chief Tom Engells has accepted a national appointment to the American Society of Industrial Security’s Technical Standards Committee for Private Security Companies.
Silva named as Chief of Vascular Surgery
Dr. Michael B. Silva, Jr., as chief of the new Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy in the Department of Surgery. The function of the new division is to foster close collaboration of vascular surgery, interventional radiology, cardiology and other medical specialties for effective and durable treatment of arterial and venous disease. The division offers patients experienced care as well as state-of-the-art technology in the treatment of vascular conditions.
