The Biomedical Science Academy is accepting applications from fourth- to sixth-graders in Galveston for this enrichment program funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

The five sessions take place on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, beginning Oct. 22 and continuing through Dec. 10, and are meant to raise awareness of science through hands-on activities in basic chemistry, physics, biology and space science. James E. Beall II Memorial Lecture

“Speech and auditory memory: How deep is their connection” was the topic of Mortimer Mishkin, chief of the cognitive neuroscience section at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Md.

The James E. Beall II Memorial Lecture was sponsored by the neuroscience graduate program and the department of neuroscience and cell biology.

Presentations

• “Mechanisms of allergic inflammation in asthma” was the subject addressed by Dr. William J. Calhoun, professor of internal medicine and director of the multidisciplinary clinical trials office, in conjunction with Satish K. Srivastava, professor in the department of biochemistry and molecular biology, and Dr. Regina Pillai, in the division of pulmonary and critical care.

• “Network visualization and analysis of biomedical data” was the topic of Suresh Bhavnani, associate professor of biomedical informatics, at the Galveston National Laboratory.
