A hive with an estimated 500,000 honeybees, which has clung to a UTMB building since 2005, was removed over the weekend. Fred Thomas, an epidemiologist and beekeeper, helped to safely capture the bees from the exterior of the sixth floor of the Basic Science Building and move them to his other colonies on the island. “The honeybees are docile, and have been here six years and survived two hurricanes,” Thomas said. “Periodically, parts of the hive fall off. It got so big it can’t support itself, and it freaks people out when it falls to the ground.”
