SHP students hold Cuisine Carnival

Students from UTMB’s School of Health Professions held their first SHP Cuisine Carnival raising money and awareness for a multitude of SHP organizations. The event raised $1,394.50 and included games, giveaways, food, music and even a visit by the Chick-Fil-A cow.

“As Chair of Student Ambassador Society, I wanted to make a difference by promoting the School of Health Professions and helping people to become more knowledgeable about the SHP professions. We all learned something new about each program and were unified as students within the SHP,” said Shama Shaukatali, president of SHP Student Ambassadors. “It was an excellent experience and hopefully with the help of dedicated student leaders and ambassador, it will become an annual tradition.”

 

SHP organizations who were represented were Respiratory Care; Physician Assistants; Student Organization of Clinical Laboratory Science; Student Occupational Therapy Association and Physical Therapy.

 

The money raised goes to support the SHP student organizations with various expenses including professional development.

 

Elizabeth J. Protas, vice president and dean, School of Health Professions attended the event saying, “This was a fun and tasty way to raise awareness of the organizations in SHP.”

 

The American Red Cross Student Organization, a newly re-established service organization that helps create awareness and prepare students for emergencies and disasters, was also present as was the SHP Student Ambassador Society.

 

Students who are interested in joining a SHP organization are encouraged to contact the respective department. The American Red Cross Student Organization is a school-wide group and is open to all UTMB students. For more information contact Shaukatali at shshauka@utmb.edu.
