TMF Health Quality Institute recently announced that UTMB Health won a Texas Health Care Quality Improvement Award by achieving gains in key clinical areas that align with national health care priorities. The award recognizes hospitals that undertake efforts to advance the quality of care in their facilities.

Free oral cancer screenings

UTMB’s Ear, Nose & Throat Consultants will be offering free oral cancer screenings in observance of the 15th annual Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week.

The screenings will be offered April 26 at the Ear, Nose & Throat Consultants Clinic in League City, located in Brittany Plaza, 1600 West League City Parkway, Suite D.

Screening hours will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The screening is painless and only takes about 15 minutes. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are preferred. For information or to make an appointment, contact Cheshe Langford 409-772-2715.

Driver safety course

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is offering the AARP Driver Safety Program in April and June.

The four-hour program will be offered from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. April 25 (and again on June 27) at OLLI, 4700 Broadway, Suite B101.

The class is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-AARP members, payable by cash or check.

Breast Cancer support group

The “Reconstruction of a survivor” breast cancer support group will hold a meeting from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the UTMB Specialty Care Center at Victory Lakes, 2240 Gulf Freeway in League City.

Visiting campus

“The natural and unnatural history of hepatitis C virus infection” was presented by Dr. Harvey J. Alter, chief of clinical studies and associate director for research in transfusion medicine at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda.

“Malaria transmission blocking vaccine: A little step toward a bigger goal of malaria elimination” was the topic of Nirbhay Kumar, chairman of the department of tropical medicine at Tulane University in New Orleans.

Presentation

“Next-generation tools for biomarker discovery: Integrating visual analytics with machine learning” was presented by Suresh K. Bhavnani, associate professor of biomedical informatics.
