UTMB and The Ruth Kempner Endowment for Breast Cancer Screening recently partnered to provide free screening mammograms for uninsured women in Galveston County. In an effort to reach these uninsured women, UTMB Health brought its mobile mammography van to churches in Galveston County
On June 3, 2012, the UTMB Sunday Screening Mammogram Program visited Greater Barbour’s Chapel church in Texas City, Texas.

UTMB has been granted full accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. Administered by the American College of Surgeons, the program grants accreditation to those centers that provide patients with access to a full range of state-of-the-art services, a multidisciplinary team approach to treatment, and information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options.
Joan E. Nichols, associate director of research and operations for the Galveston National Laboratory, graduated from the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program.
Established in 1995, the program offers extensive educational, networking and mentoring opportunities to support women leaders aspiring to the highest administrative ranks of academic health centers. Since 1997, 12 UTMB faculty members have participated in the fellowship program, joining a diverse group of more than 700 alumni representing more than 180 medical, dental and public health schools across the United States, Canada and Europe.
The La Marque Independent School District received provisional approval by Texas Education Agency for the Renaissance Academy, a newly established Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Academy within the district. The application was submitted in May with the assistance of Drs. Marguerite Sognier and Terry Talley, of the Southeast Regional Texas —
STEM Center at UTMB. The program is sponsored by the Office of Education Outreach under the auspices of Dr. Clifford W. Houston and provides professional development activities for teachers and a series of interconnecting pipeline programs for students.
