UTMB hosted a special event offering sports and activity physicals to area youngsters. Hosted at theSpecialty Care Center at Victory Lakes, 68 students were screened by volunteers from the departments of Cardiology, Family Medicine, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Physical Therapy, Otolaryngology, Pediatrics, and the Community Based Clinics (Adult Medicine and Pediatrics). Together with other UTMB nurses and staff, a total of  378 volunteer hours were logged as part of this outreach and awareness effort.

While sports pre-participation examinations are not a substitute for the routine health care provided by a personal physician, the station-based approach used by UTMB at the event allowed students and their parents to move through quickly, with the university’s medical specialists available to advise on any special conditions that were noted.

This year’s successful effort was orchestrated by Bonnie Benkula, associate vice president of Ambulatory Operations and Health System Service Lines, and Dr. Ronald Lindsey, chair of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation.
