From the moment patients learn they have cancer, they can meet with their surgeons, radiation oncologists and medical oncologists, who all are located at the cancer center. If patients need additional imaging services, such as image-guided needle biopsies, to assess the extent of the cancer, those services are offered in the same convenient facility, said Dr. Colleen Silva, Professor of Surgery and Director of the Breast Health Center and Surgical Oncology.
Patients who do not have cancer, but who suspect that genetic or environmental factors may predispose them to it, can make an appointment with UTMB’s cancer prevention specialists for tests and counseling about risk reduction options such as chemoprevention, prophylactic surgery or intense screening/surveillance programs, all of which take place at UTMB’s Cancer Center.
Outpatient treatments, which include a wide range of minimally invasive surgeries as well as laser, microwave, radio-frequency and cryo ablation, are performed at the Cancer Center, and chemotherapy treatment is provided in its in-house infusion center. The center also features a new state-of-the-art tomotherapy unit, one of fewer than 10 in operation in the world, which targets tumors with highly precise radiation while sparing the normal tissue around them.
“All of our clinicians provide comprehensive, compassionate, individualized care to their patients, and work closely with our community partners to ensure the health and wellness of the region,’’ Callender said.
Among the types of cancer treated are: bone, brain, breast, cervical, colon, rectal, anal, head & neck, leukemia, lymphoma, liver, lung, oral, ovarian, pancreatic, pediatric, prostate, penile, renal, skin and stomach, while hospice and palliative care also are provided.
