Congratulations to UTMB faculty members on their recent appointments to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Endowments. It is a huge honor to be named as a holder and each one of these individuals is well deserving of the appointments they have received.
The interest earned from endowments each year is used to further both research and education for the department.
Mahmoud S. Ahmed, professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Appointed as inaugural holder of the
Mildred Harvey and Phyllis Hankins Distinguished Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Ahmed earned his PhD in Biochemistry from the College of Medicine, University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences in 1974 and received his postdoctoral fellow in Biochemistry from John Hopkins University in 1977. He joined UTMB in 2002 in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and has appointments in the Graduate Program for both the Department of Molecular Biology and the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology.
Abbey B. Berenson, professor and director for Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Women’s Health, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Appointed as inaugural holder of the Ruth Hartgraves, M.D. Distinguished Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Berenson received her undergraduate degree in 1980 from the University of Texas in Austin. She received her Doctor of Medicine in 1984 and completed her residency in 1988 from Baylor College of Medicine. She completed her fellowship at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital in London, England in 1991. She received a Certificate in Business Administration from the University of Houston in 2003. In 2009, she received a Master’s in Medical Science and her Doctoral Degree in Preventative Medicine in 2011 from UTMB. Berenson’s academic career began in 1989 as an Assistant Professor at UTMB.
Perry L. Fulcher, Sr., associate professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Appointed as holder of the Dr. J.L. Jinkins and Dr. J.L. Jinkins, Jr. Endowed Professorship in Gynecology. Fulcher received his Bachelor of Arts in 1976 from North Texas State University. He received his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1980 and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1984 from UTMB. His academic career began in 1984 as an assistant professor for the Women’s HealthCare Group at UTMB.
Gary D.V. Hankins, professor and chairman, department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Appointed as inaugural holder of the Garland D. Anderson, MD Distinguished University Chair in Maternal Fetal Medicine. Hankins received his Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1973 from Virginia Military Institute and in 1977, he received his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his internship in 1978 and his residency in 1981, both from Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center. He also completed his fellowship in Critical Care Medicine in 1982 from Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, and a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine in 1984 from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Hankins was recruited to UTMB in 1995.
Lyuba Levine, assistant professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Appointed as inaugural holder of the Edward V. Hannigan, MD Professorship in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Levine received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Computer Science and Robotics in 1987 and completed her PhD in 1992 from Latvian Polytechnic Institute in Riga, Latvia. She completed her Premedical Education Program at Yale University in 1992. She received her Doctor of Medicine from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies in 1996. She completed her PGY I and PGY II Residency in 1998 at St. Michael’s Medical Center and her PGY III and PGY IV in 2000 from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Levine received her Master of Medical Sciences degree in 2003 and completed her fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology in 2004 from UTMB. Levine’s academic career began in 2004. Her APT packet has been approved by the Departmental APT Committee and submitted to the University APT Committee. Upon approval, her promotion will be as Associate Professor.
Carolyn Nelson-Becker, division chief and administrative director for the Regional Maternal & Child Health Program in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, appointed to the Ruth Hartgraves, M.D. Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Nelson-Becker received her Diploma in Nursing in 1975 from Nebraska Methodist School of Nursing in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1979, she completed the Nurse-Midwifery Education Program in Jackson, Mississippi. Nelson-Becker received her Bachelor of Arts in Nursing from Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska in 1987. She completed the MSN, OB-GYN Nurse Practitioner Program at UTMB in 1989. Nelson-Becker received her Doctor of Education from the University of Houston in 1999.
Luis Diego Pacheco, assistant professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Appointed as inaugural holder of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Distinguished Professorship in Research and Mentoring Excellence. Pacheco received his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1995 from the University of Costa Rica in San Pedro de Montes de Oca, Costa Rica. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1999 from the System of Postgraduate Studies at the University of Costa Rica. He completed an internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2004. In 2006, he completed his fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine and a fellowship in Anesthesia Critical Care at UTMB. Pacheco’s APT packet has been approved by the University to be effective September 1, 2012 as an Associate Professor with tenure.
Gwyn Richardson, assistant professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Appointed as holder of the Frances Eastland Connally Professorship in Gynecological Oncology. Richardson received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Bryn Mawr College in 1992. She received her Doctor of Jurisprudence Law in 1997 from the University of Texas in Austin. She received her Doctor of Medicine Degree in 2001, completed her internship and residency in 2005, and her fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology in 2009 from UTMB.
George R. Saade, professor and division chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Appointed as holder of the Jennie Sealy Smith Distinguished Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Saade received his Doctor of Medicine in 1985 from the American University of Beirut Medical School, Beirut, Lebanon. He completed his residency from American University of Beirut Medical School in 1987 and a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology from Union Memorial Hospital in 1991. His fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine from Baylor College of Medicine was completed in 1994.
Russell R. Snyder, associate professor and vice chairman, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Appointed as holder of the Faculty Distinguished Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology honoring Alvin L. LeBlanc, MD, Harry M. Little, Jr., MD, and L. Charles Powell, Jr., MD. Snyder received his Bachelor of Science in 1975 from the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1978. He completed his internship in 1979 and his residency in 1982, both from Wilford hall USAF Medical Center. Dr. Snyder completed his fellowship in Gynecologic and Breast Pathology from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in 1984. Dr. Snyder was recruited to UTMB in 1997.
Tony S. Wen, assistant professor and Residency Program Director, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Reappointed as holder of the Howard and Lillian Becker Distinguished Professorship in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Wen received his Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 1981 and his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry in 1982 from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He received his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1988 and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1990 from Texas Tech University Health Science Center. He completed his residency in 1992 and his fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine in 1994 from the University of Texas – Houston School of Medicine.
Chandrasekhar Yallampalli, professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, appointed to the School of Medicine Distinguished Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Yallampalli received his Bachelor of Veterinary Sciences in 1975 from A.P. Agricultural University in Hyderabad A.P., India. He received his Master of Veterinary Sciences in 1977 from Indian Veterinary Research Institute in Izatnagar U.P., India. In 1985, he received his Doctor of Philosophy in Reproductive Endocrinology from the University of Adelaide, Adelaide, Australia. He completed his fellowship in 1988 at the Medical Research Council of Canada, University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada.
