October Health Walks

Registration Deadline

A federal grant administered by UTMB is still providing funds for local residents to gain certification and begin a career in health care. The next deadline to register for Certified Nurse Assistant courses at the College of the Mainland and Galveston College is Oct. 19.

The Nurse Education and Placement Program, through a grant from the Department of Labor, provides assistance with a primary focus on the unemployed, the underemployed and veterans and their spouses. The NEPP represents a partnership among UTMB, the Gulf Coast Workforce Board, community colleges, universities and health care providers. For information, visit the website. 

Seminar For Caregivers

Designed for caregivers of people who have memory loss, a three-hour seminar is scheduled for 1 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Multispecialty Center and Stark Diabetes Clinic, 2660 Gulf Freeway South, League City. Seminar participants do not have to be affiliated with UTMB. The seminar is free, but preregistration is required. Diabetes Support

“Holiday survival planning” is the topic for the Oct. 8 meeting of the diabetes support group that meets at the UTMB Stark Diabetes Clinic. The group meets from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month in Suite 9 of the UTMB Multispecialty Center, 2660 Gulf Freeway South in League City. “Clinical investigation of West Nile virus: 10 years of research on the Houston cohort” was presented by Kristy Murray, associate professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

• “Maintaining iron balance in blood donors” was the topic of Dr. Barbara J. Bryant, associate professor of pathology and associate director of the Blood Bank Division.

• Dr. Roberto P. Garofalo, director of the division of clinical and experimental immunology and infectious diseases, presented “Host-pathogen interaction in viral bronchiolitis.”
