The first Global Health Education Symposium was held Oct. 17 in the Galveston National Laboratory and drew 100 participants.  The symposium, “The Role of Students in Global Health” featured several presentations by students followed by discussions.

The keynote was delivered by Dr. Ruth Berggren, director of the Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.  Dr. Berggren was a physician at New Orleans’ Charity Hospital when Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. She remained at the hospital for about a week, caring for the critically ill and documented her experiences in several articles, include two that were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Matt Dacso, director of the UTMB Center for Global Health Education, said that the inaugural session was a great success, noting that attendees came from all over the state.
