As part of its ongoing series featuring experts at the forefront of biosecurity policy development and implementation, the
Galveston National Laboratory hosted “Biological weapons: Does U.S. biodefense meet the threat?” Presenters were Dr. Gigi Kwik Gronvall, senior associate in the Center for Biosecurity at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and Dr. Phillip K. Russell, former senior adviser in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Public Health Emergency Preparedness at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“Molecular pathogenomics of group A Streptococcus epidemics: What have we learned?” was presented by Dr. James M. Musser, director of the Center for Molecular and Translational Human Infectious Disease Research at the Methodist Hospital Research Institute in Houston.

Blocks closing for construction
Two blocks of the campus, near the School of Nursing/School of Health Professions building, will be closed for the installation of underground utilities. The closure of Mechanic Street, between 11th and 12th streets, and 12th Street between Strand and Mechanic streets, is expected to last until August 2013.
