Institutional Ethics Program

The Institutional Ethics Program is a joint commitment of the UTMB Health System and the Institute for Bioethics & Health Humanities which recognizes that uncertainty, confusion and tension regarding different individual, professional, social and institutional values often produce complex ethical issues and questions. The Program is composed of the Clinical Ethics Consultation Service, the Integrated Ethics Program, Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC), and numerous educational and academic endeavors.

About Me

My role within the Institute for Bioethics & Health Humanities is to provide expertise in the area of clinical ethics, applied ethics and carceral bioethics. I am the Director of the Institutional Ethics Program at UTMB; responsible for the Ethics Consultation Service, the Institutional Ethics Committee, clinical ethics education and Integrative Ethics Services. I have a diverse background with prior experience as an electrophysiologist/molecular biologist, clinical scientist in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, and clinical ethicist at a comprehensive cancer center. I am able to bridge academic and clinical practice by leveraging varied experiences and perspectives to foster the embodiment of ethical values and norms into clinical and research practice. I am an active participant in the MyWellbeing Dept to address issues of wellness, self-care, burnout and compassion fatigue. Activities I contribute to include: wellness rounds throughout our hospital system; assist in leading a wellness support group; partnering with our correctional managed care colleagues to address wellness and distress; lead workshops in appreciative inquiry for hospital system stakeholders. I have also spent much effort in developing and producing patient/provider narratives as a modality for ethical inquiry and wellness support. I have been creating ethics educational content for ten years, including courses on the foundations of clinical ethics, research ethics, informed consent, genetics, clinical trials, health law and intellectual property.
