Tips for Approaching Faculty Research Mentors
Before contacting a faculty member:
- Please use your UTMB email account and be professional
- Introduce yourself and state your interest in their field
- Politely ask for a meeting and always be flexible with their schedules
- If this is your first time seeking research, state something like you want to gain exposure to medical research and would be happy to help out on any projects that could use a student
Before meeting the faculty member:
- Please familiarize yourself with their work
- Do a quick google search, read their profile, look at their publications
- Make sure you give them realistic expectations regarding # hours per week, etc…
- Take note of the projects they talk about. You will feel and look more prepared if you can remember what they are actually referring to, and ask follow up questions.
