Pettitt named American Chemical Society fellow

Dr. Bernard Montgomery “Monte” Pettitt, a biochemistry and molecular biology professor at UTMB, has been recognized as a 2021 Fellow of the American Chemical Society.

The American Chemical Society Fellows Program recognizes outstanding achievements and contributions to science and the society.

Pettit was recognized for the development and application of theories of liquid state to protein and nucleic acid systems. The society also found his leadership in teaching is noteworthy, and that Pettitt has trained 100 students and postdoctoral fellows.

The society also recognized Pettitt’s service to the Greater Houston local section as program chair and general chair for Southwest Regional ACS meetings in 2006 and 2016. He also has served as a Project SEED mentor since 2014.

 Pettitt has been with UTMB for almost 10 years. He is the Robert A. Welch Distinguished University Chair in Chemistry, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Pharmacology and Toxicology. He is also director of the Sealy Center for Structural Biology and Molecular Biophysics.
