BSEI: Biorepository for Severe Emerging Infections

The UTMB Biorepository for Severe Emerging infections (BSEI) is an integral component of the UTMB Institutional Biorepository, which together serve as a centralized tissue and biospecimen resource for UTMB investigators and collaborators. UTMB is a member of the University of Texas System Health Biobank (UTSHB) Consortium, a collaborative effort among eight UT institutions created to standardize and expand access to biospecimens across the system. A Biorepository Oversight Committee oversees general operational activities of BSEI, review of sample and data request, and integration with other biospecimen activities across the health care system.

BSEI utilizes protocols for the acquisition of de-identified discarded tissue as well as prospective collection protocols for more extensive bio-sampling from consented subjects. BSEI holds biospecimens and clinical data from over 100 COVID-19 positive subjects, 1000's of confirmed COVID-19 nasal swabs, and mpox subjects.
