It has been five years since the
UTMB Development Board made its first appearance on the World Wide
Web. Much has changed in that time, but this site still aims to
provide an opportunity for you and others to learn more about the
board and its mission.
UTMB is a valuable asset, not only to Texas but to our nation and beyond. The university’s world-class programs in health sciences education, research and patient care improve the lives of those they touch directly—and countless others who benefit from the knowledge generated at Texas’ first academic health center.
UTMB is a state institution, yet it currently receives 21 percent of its annual budget from state general revenue. The remaining 79 percent comes from patient care services provided in its hospitals and clinics, research grants and contracts that help fuel new discoveries, and fund-raising initiatives to secure support ranging from one-time gifts to permanent endowments and planned gifts. Development Board members play a key role in UTMB’s efforts to broaden its base of philanthropic support by serving as local, regional, national and international ambassadors who share the good news of the extraordinary work taking place at the university.
Our 86-member board comprises physicians, attorneys, educators, business leaders, community volunteers and UTMB alumni. Individual members, most of whom hail from five regions in Texas, serve three-year terms. Our mission is to become familiar with the university’s priority programs of excellence and to help formulate and implement fund-raising plans for those areas. We are advocates, volunteers and patrons and, as such, play a larger role in UTMB’s efforts to reach out to alumni, patients and potential supporters, throughout Texas and beyond.
UTMB is strengthened when community leaders dedicate their time, talents and expertise to advancing health care, education and research. The Development Board is a valuable partner in this effort.
The coming year promises still more change, but UTMB’s characteristic spirit of innovation remains constant. As a board, we can help the university seize unprecedented opportunities as we support Dr. Stobo and his team in their work to improve the health of Texas—and society as a whole.
I invite you to explore this site, and I thank you for visiting.
Sincerely,
Peter K. Thompson, M.D.
