Earth Day Reflections

This past April, BERG participated for the first time in the Annual UTMB Earth Day Celebration.

Not only was Earth Day a wonderful success, BERG members came out in full-strength with highly visible and colorful  BERG  T-Shirts, to show support for their organization and respect for our planet.

BERG had a wonderfully decorated table, complete with the BERG Banner. We offered an old African and Southern  U.S.  favorite...Okra seeds (and recipe).

Visitors to the BERG table included UTMB  Provost Dr. Charles Mouton, Dr. Janet Southerland, and Dr. Robert Thomas  (former Chief  Diversity Officer). Be sure to visit the BERG Facebook page to see all of the pictures of the event.

IMHOTEP on UTMB’s Galveston Campus

Universally regarded as the First Physician, IMHOTEP, an ancient Egyptian from Africa, is on display right here on the Galveston campus of UTMB.  IMHOTEP, along with other significant figures in the history of medicine, is featured on the second floor of the “Old Red” museum.

If you have not seen this, please make time to visit. The entire exhibit is very well done...and it is gratifying to see an ancient Africans’ accomplishments being honored and acknowledged.

Farewells -Changes in Diversity Leadership

In our February issue, we spotlighted  UTMB’s  Diversity and Inclusion Consultant, Leah Jacobs.  Soon after publication of that BERG Newsletter, and after 11 years with UTMB, Ms. Jacobs decided to pursue another opportunity outside of UTMB.

During the same timeframe, Dr. Robert D. Thomas came onboard with UTMB as the Chief Diversity Officer. However,  circumstances were such that Dr. Thomas was unable to remain in his position and is no longer with UTMB. BERG wishes both of them the very best in their future endeavors.

A national search is being conducted by UTMB to identify the next Chief Diversity Officer that will help UTMB continue to move forward with diversity, equity, equality and inclusion. BERG looks forward to welcoming this individual upon arrival. BERG will work closely with this individual to ensure the entire UTMB  community benefits.
