Welcome to the Life Support Education Department (LSED)

The new 2015 American Heart Association (AHA) curriculum for Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) has been released. Effective June 1st, we will begin teaching all ACLS classes from the new material and will be implementing AHA process changes. Here are some key points:

  • AHA has eliminated Basic Life Support (BLS) challenges, meaning the ACLS classes will no longer offer renewal of BLS status added at the end of the day. Therefore you will need to register for a separate BLS course to renew your BLS status.
  • All participants must come to class with the appropriate textbook and the algorithm cards. The current book is “AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Manual, 2016 Edition” available in the UTMB Bookstore and from the AHA website through one of their approved online vendors.
  • You must complete the pre-course assessment test with a minimum score of 70% (found in your ACLS textbook) prior to the class start.

If you haven’t reviewed the changes to the BLS program (effective April 19, 2016) please see review them in Course Descriptions, located in the left navigation pane.

American Heart Association

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association. Successful participation in one of these classes alone does not imply certification to perform the skills learned in the class.
