Course Description

The BLS Healthcare Provider Course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. The course is intended for certified or non-certified, licensed or non-licensed healthcare professionals.

Courses Offered

Basic Life Support Course
This course is intended for those who are certified/licensed healthcare providers or those who provide direct patient care. The course is video based with hands on interactive practice and skills stations. AHA Best Practice Guidelines are explained and reinforced. There is plenty of time for practice and questions. The class is approximately 4 to 4.5 hours in length, depending on the size of the class.

Non-Healthcare Provider CPR (Heart Saver)
This course in intended for those that are not certified/licensed healthcare providers. This would include office staff, clerks, registration staff, transportation or general public. This course is video based and focuses on hands on practice with a focus is on proficient, high quality CPR. AHA Best Practice Guidelines are reinforced. There is plenty of time for practice and questions. The class is approximately 4 hours in length, depending on the size of the class.

Online BLS
This option is for those who may not be able to attend a regular BLS course. Online renewal of BLS status is done through the online AHA website. The course is divided into three parts with part 1 being the online didactic portion and parts 2 & 3 being the skills practice and demonstration here at the Life Support Education Department. There is a cost for the online renewal that is paid to AHA for part 1. Please note: UTMB does not reimburse staff members for the AHA part 1 course.  Skills practice and demonstration are offered free of charge for UTMB staff members. All BLS/CPR classes are free to the UTMB Community (Staff, Students and Physicians). If you are not a UTMB employee or student, there is a $25 course fee to take a CPR class. All course fees must be paid within 5 days of registration. Call our cashier's office at 409-772-2503 for payment.

What to Bring to Class

  1. UTMB ID Badge
  2. Current BLS Card or eCard printed out
  3. Current appropriate text book for your class. "AHA Basic Life Support Manual, 2016 Edition" OR "AHA HeartSaver Provider Manual, 2016 Edition"

Participant Expectations

You will be expected to:

  1. Be prompt for class start times. No one will be allowed into class once the first video portion of the class has begun.  No expectations.
  2. Read the appropriate Provider Manual for the assigned class.
  3. Demonstrate mastery of BLS skills during the course.
  4. Pass the written exam at end of course with an 84% or higher. All exams are open resource (open book & notes).

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Successful participation in one of these classes alone does not imply certification to perform the skills learned in the class.
