New Center for Nucleic Acid Technologies to be led by UTMB Professor Dr. Alexander Bukreyev

Dr. Alex Bukreyev, a leading researcher in the development of medical countermeasures for high consequence pathogens and Professor in the Departments of Pathology and Microbiology & Immunology at UTMB, has been appointed as the first Director of the newly formed Center for Nucleic Acid Technologies at UTMB.

Dr. Bukreyev is an internationally recognized virologist and innovator in molecular medicine who leads a team that studies the pathogenesis of diseases including Ebola, Marburg, Lassa, new world hantaviruses and respiratory syncytial virus. 

Since joining UTMB in 2010, his work has led to the development of vaccines, monoclonal antibodies and other therapies. His portfolio of research involves collaborations with prestigious universities, international pharmaceutical companies and government agencies, with major funding from the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Defense. In 2025 he was one of only 65 scientists worldwide elected to the American Academy of Microbiology.

The establishment of this new Center under Dr. Bukreyev is an investment in the development of new methodologies for fighting disease and improving health outcomes around the world. It also will serve to create opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration across the UTMB research enterprise.
