Q: What has been your career path so far that led you to becoming an ophthalmology tech? What got you interested in this career?
A: I began my ophthalmology career while in the U.S. Navy. A friend of mine was going to start a pilot school for ophthalmology/operating room technicians and asked me if I would be interested in taking the classes. I said yes, and here I am. Since leaving the military, I have worked as an ophthalmic surgical scrub technician, optician, contact lens specialist, ophthalmic technician, surgery coordinator and clinic research coordinator.
Q: What do you find most fulfilling about being an ophthalmology tech?
A: Most people do not realize how multifaceted the eye is. I literally learn something new every day, which is what has kept me interested in ophthalmology for so many years.
Q: How long have you been with UTMB?
A: Approximately 12 years.
Q: What do you like about working at UTMB?
A: I chose UTMB after moving to the League City area. The drive to the island is very relaxing, with the beach and ocean views along the way -- even with the current road construction. What I like about UTMB is the people I work with every day, especially my clinic team. The PSSs, technicians, physicians, managers and housekeeping are amazing, caring people.
Q: Where do you see your career going from here?
A: I’m not sure where this career path will lead me. But I plan to continue with UTMB to find out.
