The fascinating dichotomy that is human nature—fragile yet resilient at the same time—resonates with the new executive vice president and chief operating officer of the UTMB Health System.

Over the past few months, it’s been wonderful to be part of ongoing discussions with individuals from all four of our campuses, our physician leaders and service line leaders across UTMB. An improved alignment across the health system enhances our ability to grow patient volume, advance service expectations and improve quality performance.

As Dr. Jochen Reiser shared his vision for UTMB’s transformative reorganization in the fall, we have arrived upon a new opportunity to build on our institution’s tremendous clinical strengths and enhance service to our communities.

Since the restructuring, I’ve gotten questions concerning whether we are going to continue to explore and implement the Lean system of management. Clarity on this is important because having a system for process improvement is vital to any organization of UTMB’s size, depth and breadth.

Dr. Josette Armendariz-Batiste will be forever missed and remembered. Even in our grief, her colleagues here in the Health System can take joy in knowing that she touched so many lives and left the world a better, brighter place than she found it.

UTMB is one team that I am most proud to be part of! We participate in the consummate team sport in the Health System centered around the patient.

I have chosen to stay at UTMB my entire career because I see compassion, kindness, hard work and genuine love in the people who work here at UTMB.

There is no mission, no Best Care, no healed bodies, no new life, and no comfort, compassion and friendly smiles without you.
