I have to brag on what an amazing team UTMB has! I don’t believe I’ve ever experienced such a strong support network across departments and campuses!
On Feb. 20, we had the second School Nurse Education Symposium. The first occurrence was last year and the brainchild of Nurse Manager Jessica Oliveira and Clear Lake administration and nursing leadership. They saw a huge need for the nurses in the community—and it has blossomed into a great partnership. In 2022, we held an education day for the school nurses of the Clear Creek Independent School District.
One of the original goals that Jessica, CLC Administrator Ann Varghese and Associate Chief Nursing Officer Merry Philip had was to open it up to more than just CCISD. This year, thanks to that trio of leaders, we were able to fulfill that dream!
Ann pointed me toward the Sponsorship Committee that granted an amazing amount of funding. With a budget I couldn’t believe and UTMB Growth Specialist Lori Blackwell working her magic behind the scenes, the school nurses had plenty of space at the Lone Star Flight Museum and full bellies thanks to the treats of local catering company Robinette Catering.
Our speakers and presenters were the real heroes of the day. Dr. Jarod Caruso from the Pedi ED, Nell Loewen from the forensics team and Jessica and Megan Riodan representing nursing leadership gave thoughtful and fulfilling lectures. It was fun getting to see the different personalities and passions as they connected with the audience.
For skills stations it was a mix of nursing services: Stephen Orrell (a new graduate nurse) and I touched on assessment techniques, Jason Bolding from respiratory care services shared his expertise in trach care, and Child Life Specialist Regina Burdett did everything from guided imaging for relaxation to discussing the pain gate theory!
But I’ve saved the best for last! Colleen James from the Nursing Education, Advancement and Resources Department worked wonders in pulling together all the necessities to provide nurses with continuing education hours. Her level of support embodies UTMB’s values. She’s one of those rare people in life that you truly aspire to be more like.
Even after a long day, Lori and Colleen were jazzed and talking about what we can do next year. Lori was already brainstorming how to bring in more of our partners; Colleen decided we should make sure to add “Third Annual” to our title.
Don’t get me wrong, there were a lot of lessons learned for my first project. But I honestly can’t wait to see the evaluations roll in so we can start planning for next year. It’s hard not to get excited about the work we do when an excellent foundation has been built and you are surrounded by a really neat team!
