This quarter’s winner of the Journey to Zero Award is Jennie Sealy 8C SICU.
The team at Jennie Sealy 8C SICU is being recognized for showing a decrease of five CLABSI infections in 2023 from 2022. The team accomplished this by approaching the issue from different angles, including:
- Addressing gaps in the use of the insertion check list and dressing changes
- Performing validations for all SICU staff, including HCSS staff contracted to the SICU
- Addressing supply shortages
- Implementing the use of Prevantics swabs on all central lines
- Implementing HAI audits (created by R Ussery) for the free-floating charge nurses to fill out at the end of their shifts
- Providing for intermittent rounds by nursing leadership in conjunction with epidemiology partners
- Prioritizing staff engagement, encouraging team members to provide constructive feedback to their peers, residents and physicians on proper dressing placement and other issues.
"This group really started owning their lines and their dressings and their line care,” said Melissa Gonzalez, director, Nursing Professional Excellence. “They were really advocating to get those lines out if they were no longer needed. Jason Sheaffer came up with the line, ‘To de-line is divine.’
"The attention to their lines and then the engagement of the staff and the collaboration with leadership education and the physicians group I think is what really drove this change,” she said.
Congratulations on a job well done, Jennie Sealy 8C SICU!
