Image that says Empowering Social Workers

March is National Social Work Month. It may be close to over, but it's never too late to thank a social worker.

When did you start working at UTMB?

I started as an intern in 2014, hired as a social worker in 2016.

What is the best thing about your job?

My beautiful oncology patients and their families.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

When they pass away.

Who are your heroes?

My mom (who passed in 2022). She was an inspiration, and I can genuinely say if it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t be where I am today.

What is your favorite quote?

“How you see impacts what you see.”

Describe your life in six words.

Loving GiGi, aunt, mom, sister, godmother, chaotic (currently working on)

What are three words that describe you?

Compassionate. Trustworthy. Genuine

What is your favorite:

    • Book: Right now, the DSM IV-TR (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition, text revision)
    • Color: Purple
    • Movie: "Transformers"
    • Food: Mexican or Indian
    • Song: Too many to name

What is the coolest thing (or a fun fact) about you?

Youngest of four with 12 years between me and my next oldest sibling. Plus, my name is pronounced "Sharon."

What is a dream that you want to make come true one day?

Work with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in some aspect.

What is a cause you’re passionate about?

Being kind, human rights.

When have you felt the proudest?

Speaking to a patient and things just started to click with my clinical work.

What is a favorite memory from childhood?

Realizing in sixth grade I should be a social worker.

What’s the best trip you’ve ever been on and why?

Still waiting for it. 😉

Describe an experience that has had a lasting impact on you.

Death of my sister and my mom.

What has been your most meaningful accomplishment so far?

My kids (by birth or otherwise, they’re my babies).

What is one thing you can’t live without?

My peace.

Describe a funny or unique experience that you’ve had.

While I was interning at UTMB, I was on a home visit with another social worker and the patient's dog humped my arm the entire time. No matter where I moved around in the room, the dog was on it!

If you could visit any place in the world, where would it be and why?

Atlanta to visit family.

If you could pick any superpower, what would it be?

My patients would all have insurance and treatment.

You’re planning a dinner party. What three people would you invite?

My Mom, to have one last conversation with her and to be able to say goodbye; my niece Jessica; and goddaughter Aisha so we could all eat together and laugh because we always had a good time together.
