Hector Garcia
Abdominal Transplant Coordinator (RN) Galveston/Victory Lakes/McAllen

When did you start working at UTMB and in what capacity?

I started in 1998 as a clerk in Medical Records.

What positions have you held at UTMB since then?

Coder in a billing department, medical lab scientist in the Chemistry Lab (graduated from the Clinical Laboratory Science program at our School of Health Professions), RN in the Surgical ICU (graduated from the BACC 2 program at UTMB School of Nursing), RN care coordinator in Care Management, transplant coordinator.

What attracted you to UTMB in the first place?

The Work School Program provided the perfect avenue for me to work full time and attend college full time to progress through my career. I have been able to earn two degrees from UTMB while employed here.

Why have you stayed at UTMB for 25 years?

UTMB has been a great place to work and go to school so even after returning to school for another degree, I had a strong drive to continue working at this institution. There is a real sense of community here that encourages lifelong commitment to the organization.

What has been being a part of the UTMB family for so long meant to you personally?

UTMB feels like home and, though it sounds cheesy, I do see my coworkers across all previous roles as my family. Our institutional culture allows us to develop these strong bonds and create a rewarding work environment.

What would you say to someone starting out in a career at UTMB?

Welcome! I invite you to experience the broad diversity of our staff and programs while mentioning that there are plenty of opportunities for growth. As a matter of fact, I said those words to my own son, who has followed in my footsteps to join our RN ICU staff.

Any special stories or experiences about your time at UTMB you would like to share?

I’m very grateful for the opportunity to pin my son at his Nursing School pinning ceremony.

What does the concept of Best Care mean to you and how do you participate in providing Best Care?

Providing high-quality, compassionate care to every patient we can. It is a unique environment where everyone, no matter their rank or title, takes part in assisting patients.

Please share anything else you would like your UTMB Health family to know about you or your time here.

Like many other UTMB employees, I have had a number of family members work for this organization, always with a sense of pride.  UTMB is a cornerstone of Galveston County and a star in the UT System. Be it hurricanes or pandemics, we at UTMB always find our way back and we get better every time.
