Deatra Josiah
Nursing program manager, Nursing Professional Development Department, Galveston Campus
When did you start working at UTMB and in what capacity?
I began my journey at UTMB in 1998 as a new graduate registered nurse after completing the LVN to RN transition program at Galveston Community College. Starting as an RN was an exciting milestone for me, and UTMB provided the perfect environment to begin my career. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of growing within the organization, taking on various roles that have allowed me to expand my skills and contribute to our mission of excellence in patient care and education.
What positions have you held at UTMB since then?
Throughout my career at UTMB, I’ve held a variety of positions that have shaped me into the professional I am today. I began as a front-line staff nurse and later transitioned into roles as an educator, nurse practitioner, nurse manager and care manager. One of my career goals was to become an educator, and I intentionally sought out diverse experiences to broaden my perspective and guide my practice. Each role taught me valuable lessons and allowed me to contribute in unique ways, all while building the foundation for my passion for teaching and professional development.
What attracted you to UTMB in the first place?
When I first joined UTMB, I was drawn not only by its reputation as one of the largest employers on Galveston Island but also by the opportunity to grow within a health system dedicated to innovation and service. Little did I know that this decision would set the foundation for a fulfilling and rewarding career.
Why have you stayed at UTMB for 25 years?
I’ve stayed at UTMB for 25 years because it truly feels like home—a place where collaboration and innovation thrive. Our academic medical center fosters an environment of learning and teamwork that inspires me daily. Whether it’s through tuition reimbursement that enabled me to achieve three degrees or the constant encouragement to practice at the top of my license, UTMB has empowered me to grow professionally and personally. I’ve laughed with colleagues, been celebrated through recognition programs and, most importantly, I’ve felt seen and valued. This sense of belonging keeps me committed to our shared mission.
What has been being a part of the UTMB family for so long meant to you personally?
Being part of the UTMB family for 25 years has been a cornerstone of my life. It’s more than just a workplace; it’s a community where I’ve built lasting friendships and found purpose in what I do every day. UTMB has seen me grow—from a young professional seeking opportunities to a leader passionate about mentoring others. It’s been a privilege to be part of a team that doesn’t just deliver care but also embodies it in everything we do.
What would you say to someone starting out in a career at UTMB?
Welcome to a place where your dreams can take root and flourish! My advice to you is to embrace every opportunity to learn and grow, because UTMB is a place that values potential and invests in its people. Seek mentorship, stay curious and never underestimate the power of collaboration. Remember, your contributions matter, and you are part of a legacy of excellence and compassion.
Any special stories or experiences about your time at UTMB you would like to share?
One moment that stands out was during a team effort to address a patient’s complex needs. It was a true collaboration of nurses, educators and providers coming together to make a difference, and it reminded me why I love working here. Moments like these reinforce the power of teamwork and our shared commitment to patient care.
What does the concept of Best Care mean to you and how do you participate in providing Best Care?
Best Care means delivering the highest standard of care with compassion, integrity and innovation. For me, it’s about empowering our nursing staff through education and professional development, ensuring they have the knowledge and tools to excel. By fostering a culture of continuous learning and collaboration, we create an environment where both patients and caregivers thrive.
Anything else you would like your UTMB Health family to know about you or your time here?
UTMB has not only shaped my career but has also shaped me as a person. Outside of work, I’ve grown in resilience and empathy, and much of that is because of the support and encouragement I’ve found here. I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to an organization that consistently strives to make a difference, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for all of us.
